Espada Preta

The ferocious looking Black Scabbardfish Aphanopus carbo at the Lota (fish market), in Funchal. The 'Espada Preta' is a predatory cutlassfish, growing up to one and a half metres long and living at average depths between 800 an 1200 meters (bathypelagic) which means there is no light and extreme pressure, hence the long eel like bodies with large eyes and sharp teeth. For over 200 years the espada has been of economic importance to Madeira, about 3000 tons is caught per year with specialized traditional long line techniques, primarily by the fishermen from the fishing village of 'Câmara de Lobos'.
